Archetypes can be compared to a seed. There is already a pattern encoded at an individual level that knows it will eventually turn into a tomato plant or petunia. Human beings are attuned to 1, 2 or 3 archetypes. How archetypes manifest at the individual level varies from person to person. For example, the healer archetype is my predominant archetype and has manifested in me as a counsellor and therapist. For others, it may germinate as a doctor, nurse or psychiatrist.
Evidence of an archetype active in our lives can be traced back throughout our life span. Its footprints are there if we look for them as it is activated in situations, life roles, and relationships. When our archetype is active in our lives, we feel more alive, grounded, centered, and empowered.
In Sacred Contracts: Awakening Your Divine Potential, Carolyn Myss comprehensively described many of the common archetypes that exist in our collective consciousness. I have selected 12 of the most common vocational archetypes taken from her book and identified below:
